GEORGIAN BAY FISHING CAMP
By: Richard L. Deuell - Boyne City Michigan. We are finally going back to Ontario for a week long fishing trip. It's been nearly seven years since our last trip to the north country. This year we're going
cool. Its been in operation since 1928, when the camp was moved from the upper French river, by tugs and back muscles, and reconstructed on this rocky island. It's a twenty mile boat trip through the Georgian Bay Islands to the French River Delta. Understanding the geology of the area, I knew this wasn't a flat marshy delta like we often think of in the States. This is a bedrock delta, with granite, basalt and quartz bedrock, partially covered with white pine, jack pine, and spreading juniper shrubs.
Thursday night, Mike and Dad arrived, before I made it home from work. We were leaving the next morning after Maggie went to school. I hadn't even started packing, although much effort had went into making a complete list of what to take. Mike told me to just pack
We planned to spend the night there and get up early Saturday morning to catch the boat from Britt to the fishing camp. Took our time on the journey north, stopping at two casinos so Mike could add to his dollar chip casino collection. I spent a few bucks of quarters in the slots each time. Mike spent 19 of the 20 dollars worth of coins at each casino. As usual, at the border I stopped at the duty free store and bought Canadian cigarettes, Export "A" ultra-lights. I've been trying to stop again, but the chance to smoke my favorite Export A's was too much. I've always had a soft spot for these, goes back to my hitchhiking adventures across eastern Ontario with Steve Youngblood. The scenery to Sudbury was not as spectacular as the trip to Wawa. No cliffs or rough rocky shorelines like the northern Lake Superior coast. |
