To: Georgian Bay Fishing Camp

GBFC 2008

Since 2005, this year was our 3rd trip to the Georgian Bay Fishing Camp. Fishing in Northern Ontario has been a family tradition for us. My Dad fished at the Honey Harbor Lodge in 1943 from a 8 passenger sized boat. They caught pike, seaweed and some bass in the middle of a large bay. Missed a following musky and caught a small one.

When I was growing up my Dad took me and several of my high school friends from Rochester New York , up to the French River/Pickerel River area for several years. We now make the trip with my Dad coming from California to leave from my house in North Carolina.

We missed the 2007 trip when that thing they call a job unfortunately prevented us from going, so we were very excited to be back. The weather was cold and rainy the week we went and the water level was very high this year. None of our 2006 spots were very hot this year. We always manage to catch a fair amount of fish. They don’t exactly jump in the boat but we always manage to be in the right spot at the right time and have that great 15 minutes of fishing. This year, as we try to do every year, is to find the bait fish using worms. We caught a tremendous amount of perch in Beacon Rock Bay; some of biggest perch I have seen up there. In that same spot we also caught several small pike, I caught one nice 6 LB walleye on a red rooster tail, my youngest son caught one 8 LB unidentified fish (sucker?) on a worm, my oldest son caught one 5 LB pike that my youngest son didn’t net very well and my dad caught a pike! It was a cold week and my Dad discovered the wood burning stove (some would say he used it too much – good thing Dave didn’t charge a wood surtax!). He must have thought he was packing clothes in California and not for the ever unpredictable Georgian Bay. We also went into Otter Bay for the first time and had good luck there trolling for walleye as I drove the boat so my two sons could catch a half dozen of them (the sacrifices we make for our kids). Next year, we want to try Fox Bay as we have never fished there and we welcome any information on where the MUSKIES are! As always, we count the days down until next year (271 if you’re counting)! We thank Dave for all he does running this camp and wonder if he ever sleeps.
